Kudos To Indy

This years' Indianapolis 500 was great, as usual, but slightly better and different than prior ones,in my opinion. Todays race saw the first time a female driver has ever led a lap in the 500. Twenty three year old Danica Patrick of Phoenix, Arizona, put up one helluva fight. She started 4th, fell back to 16th due to natural rookie mistakes, and climbed her way back up to first, holding the lead for 28 laps (I think). Dan Wheldon, of England passed her with 6 laps to go.

While Wheldon is one of the best drivers in the world, I feel certain Patrick could have held him off to the finish, were she not so low on fuel and forced to run it lean. Wheldon made an earlier pit stop while she did not,and was running fully rich. You could see the difference on every turn, too. Running so lean, her huge lead just got smaller and smaller. To rub salt in the wound, there was a caution with 2 laps to go, just after Wheldon passed her. If that caution woulda come just a lap earlier, she coulda coasted to a cool win into history. But,the fact that she led today, is living history in itself. The young lady done damned good, and proved she has what it takes to run with the big dogs. With the likes of Rahal, Andretti Sr and Unser and Foyt Srs no longer behind the wheel, I think I may just throw my support behind this gal.

Kudos to Danica for her fine racing. And to Dan Wheldon and our Brit friends across the pond, for their first win at Indy in a long time.
