Happy Birthday, Canada!

Today, our socialist neighbors to the North are celebrating the birthday of their fine land. No, I'm not talking about New York or New England. I'm talking about the Canucks.

Yes, that's right, that strange nation we share an undefended border with. I admit, I don't know much about Canada itself, except that they have clean streets, free drugs, Michael Moore, and a critter called a Sasquatch what lives in the Yukon and randomly attacks American hunters and gay campers. They also love good beer, but hate guns. That confuses me.

In all seriousness though, today is Canada's 137th (or 138th?) birthday, and I'd like to wish all of'em well. Go and visit this site for a brief history of Canada Day, and edumucate yourself.

Of course, it wouldn't be proper to write or speak of a nation's holiday without honoring it's anthem. I'm a sweetheart like that. So, here is the national anthem of Canada:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
Our True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada!
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada!
Where pines and maples grow,
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow,
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western sea!
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North strong and free!
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada!
Beneath thy shining skies
May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise
To keep thee steadfast through the years
From East to Western sea,
Our own beloved native land,
Our True North strong and free!
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Ruler supreme,
Who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our Dominion in Thy loving care.
Help us to find, O God, in Thee
A lasting rich reward,
As waiting for the better day,
We ever stand on guard.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

That's a beautiful anthem, in my opinion. The words are very moving. Of course, in Canada, with such a large French population, they always write and print stuff in both English and French. So too, shall I respect their custom:

O Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,

Sa fière liberté;

Happy birthday, neighbors! G-d be with ya and git-r-done!

Update: When I made this post yesterday, I wrote only the first verse of the Canadian national anthem, unaware there were more verses. I was made aware of this by a Canadian blogger who stopped by this morning. Thanks for the info, Temujin, and my apologies to Canadians for this oversight.
